My "pet's" name is Kootznoowoo Jim. He is an Alaskan Brown Bear that was orphaned off the coast of Admiralty Island as a cub (along with his brother, Agnoo Axhi). They both ended up in Brookfield Zoo where I work. I "share the care" for Kootz by adopting him (he was just a cub then...11 years ago). Although I have never gotten the chance to wrestle him or pet him, I have touched his nose through the plexiglass viewing window and he put his paws up on the window so I could put mine up against his. He is my Bubby, Kootzie, Kootz, Jim, Jimmy, Jimbo, Billy Joe Jim Bob, ... yeah that's about it for the names. Here's some pics...

SplashingWater

Sure you can adopt him! He eats A LOT so it takes a lot of people to buy him food. And he would love Ripley. Because I do. And he is technically my widdow boy...so he does what I tell him to do. Does Ripley like to swim?
I saw my bear resting his head on the side of his pool yesterday when he spotted some sort of bug that accidentally walked past his nose. He looked a little like a gecko for a minute slurping that bug up.

Brown bears are actually quite docile. The only time they become aggressive is when you startle them or if you get between them and their cubs. You would have to be careful because, they are wild after all, but these guys were raised in the zoo. And besides, they love me. They tell me that every morning. And they tell me that brown bears are much more like Yogi and Boo Boo then like that bear from "The Yearling".
Gee it actually hurts my feelings that you said they were unfriendly. images/smiley_icons/icon_sad.gif

Just an update...I spoke to Kootznoowoo today and told him about how all of you thought it would be cool to have a bear. He was most flattered. But he said that his brother Axhi was feeling a little low because no one made a fuss over him. So I figured I would post his picture in hopes some of you might make him feel as special as you did Kootz.

His nose looks like it is a different color in some of these pics...it has a little bit of golden color on the tips that makes it look different in different light.
Just sayin' that in case you wouldn't like him because his nose was funny.

don't worry lep...he and his brother are very conscientious about their claws...they really only use them to grab their big blocks of ice with fish and fruit frozen in them...

And all my bears...the spectacled bear, the polar bear (just the boybear because the girlbear is denned up having her cubby) and the 2 alaskan boys were very helpful to me today when I got my poopy news. Even the snow leopards came to their window to talk to me. This is why I love the animals. They would just hug me without trying to say the right thing...just hold me. sigh...

Yay !!! How cute (and amazingly tiny). Yes I know baby things are
tiny, but a polar bear one would think would be a bit larger even
at birth than the size of a newborn puppy.

We should enter the naming contest with someone's screen name from
DA (but not tell them that's the source!). Seriously that would be fun.
We can rule out Caffeinated and Craphound, I think they'd be eliminated
pretty quickly though....Absent and Gin may not be our best choices to
submit either. hmmmm

SplashingWater

actually when the baby bears are born, they are the size of a stick of butter. this is the baby at 1 month. and since mom's milk is 33% fat, they grow pretty darned fast.

and I think....very possibly......being a bear born in a superbowl year with a coach with a name as cool as "lovey"...I'm just thinking maybe the kid was named even before birth

I would be very scared of a squirrel coming up to me in this area if I were not feeding it. But if you live in an area where the squirrel is around more people I'm sure it's no big deal. Since you're feeding him he's just being your bud for food.

It's like the squirrels on college campuses. They are always so friendly because everyone is feeding them. I went to school where we had one nominated for class president. He won! He was that friendly!

Bus is very casual about doing her business too. She has to wander around for 12 years before finally being in the mood to have a bowel movement.

Lola goes like she's on a mission: #1... #2... #1 - mission complete.

Lepus

I think all bowel functions shut down once she sees a squirrel.

She can be in mid hunch, see a squirrel and then it's all over with. She's after that squirrel and the pottying is just going to have to wait.

My friend let her poms out & went back inside. Shortly after she heard doggie shrieking & ran outside to find a squirrel on her boy poms back riding him like a cowboy on a horse. I need a zoomier lens.

And to be able to control the sun.

I agree with Nomy and KK. I like the photo just the way it is!

I also really like the second shot you posted. The lone bird on the branch...very peaceful pic!

Hope you don't mind, but this would be my suggestion for a crop- isolates the little gal more and we usually have plenty enough pixels to crop if we can't zoom.

oh and I lightened her and darkened the edges a bit to make her stand out more.

Wow! I like what you did with the cropping, OnAJetPlane! What program did you use for the lighting changes?

I love them all!!!! Do you just leave your tripod set up during the day or have you allotted yourself a certain time to try to get the little guys?

They are the most active around 5pm. Unfortunately, the light isn't very good at that time. The feeders are mostly in shadows.

So, around 4pm I go out and wait for one to come around.

It requires patience I don't usually possess! Plus, they are only at the feeders for about 30 seconds. You snap off as many photos as possible, review them, make adjustments and then hope they come back so you can see if the adjustments improved the photos at all.

I haven't been using my tripod. I'll do that tomorrow. Or at least use the monopod.
